The Wikipedia entry on the Maidenhead Grid System is the source of the formulas and information used for this page.  Most of the time the grid system uses only two or three pairs to achieve the desired level of accuracy.  Three pairs will indicate an area a bit smaller than 3 miles by by 6.  This converter supports up to 5 pairs for the grid identifier, which yields an area about the size of a football field.
